BURBERRY

As part of my University course we had the privilege of having Greg Stogden from Burberry give us a guest Q&A lecture. I've never seen a lecture theatre so packed with eager students, everyone knew what an incredible opportunity it was. Gregs' hard working attitude came as no surprise, success doesn't come without hard work.Being from Leeds, I was interested to find out that the iconic Burberry trench coat is created in a factory in West Yorkshire.

The Burberry Prorsum Spring/Summer 2014 collection immediately caught my eye. The collection is ultra feminine, the use of dreamy pastel colours and gorgeous lace fabrics with touches of vibrancy work together beautifully. The dazzling jewels shimmer on the catwalk, the whole catwalk show is mesmerising. To me the collection screams summer romance. .

"I wanted it (the collection) to be gentle
soft and romantic..."

Christopher Bailey

"I'm just in love with Burberry, always have been always will be"

LONDON
(Photographs all my own)

As well as visiting the V&A museum we also continued to research designer Tom Ford for our team presentation.

We visited the Tom Ford section in Harrods as well his London Flagship store. Both were immensely helpful for research purposes that will go towards our presentation.

Here are some photographs of some of Tom ford products in both Harrods and in the flagship store.

CLUB TO CATWALK -
FASHION THE 1980'S (Exhibition at the V&A)

At the V&A Museum London, the exhibition 'Club to catwalk-fashion in the 1980's' celebrated the bold, fearless fashion of the 1980's and the fusion between club and catwalk.

The exhibition demonstrated the huge impact that the London Club Scene had on the international fashion world. The lean silhouettes of the 1970's were replaced by the limitless and fearless fashion of the 1980's. 1980's fashion consisted of oversized garments, teased hair, ripped jeans and neon clothing. Sportswear was big in the 80's stretch fabrics and Lycra was all the rage.

Designers were experimental and immensely daring during the fashion movement of the 1980's:

"WE WERE THE BRAVE NEW FACE OF FASHION AND THE BRITISH FASHION INDUSTRY WAS FRIGHTENED TO DEATH OF IT."
(Betty Jackson)

The New Romantics style emerged from Blitz Club. There was a strict dress code to be met if you wanted to gain entry to the exclusive 'Blitz' club, the clubs' promoter Steve Strange, made sure only the most creative were let in.:

"THE LOOK WAS ANDROGYNOUS, DRIPPING WITH DIAMANTE AND LADEN DOWN WITH EYELINER - THAT WAS JUST THE MEN."

(Steve Strange)

Vintage Fair

I've always been a lover of all things vintage, and vintage fairs are a great place to find inspiration and unique treasures. You can browse for hours absorbing the atmosphere, enjoying the jazzy music from past eras. Admiring fellow shoppers wearing outfits that look like they belong in the 1950's, to then searching for your own hidden gem amongst the chaos. I love it, and am always on the hunt for upcoming fairs.

These are some photographs I took from a recent Vintage fair in Nottingham:

Diana Vreeland - 'The Empress of Fashion' Magazine editor & fashion journalist (Harper's Bazaar & Vogue)

Diana Vreeland 'The eye has to travel' trailer

“Fashion is part of the daily air and it changes all the time, with all the events. You can even see the approaching of a revolution in clothes. You can see and feel everything in clothes.”

"You gotta have style. It helps you get down the stairs. It helps you get up in the morning. It’s a way of life. Without it, you’re nobody. I’m not talking about lots of clothes.”

Diana Vreeland's career at Harpers Bizarre and Vogue still remain extremely influential today. The icon transformed Vogue into a contemporary U.S fashion publication, she is responsible for launching many iconic careers and establishing countless timeless trends. Her eye for originality is something which I admire.

'The eye has to travel' gives an insight into her private life, her childhood and turbulent relationship with her mother; branding her as an "ugly little monster". I found it immensely telling and felt the film made me appreciate her impact on the fashion world even more so than before.

Street Style Brief

Armed with a camera in teams we went to explore the street style scene in Nottingham. Our aim was to photograph people who caught our eye and identify people with a unique sense of style. We were then asked to upload our photographs to a board on Pinterest.

When approaching people we explained our brief; most people were receptive and friendly and were more than happy for us to take their photograph, which made the brief enjoyable.

I regularly look on street style blogs such as:

Icons in Fashion

Anna Piaggi - Italian fashion journalist & fashion icon

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNsfF2CvqeI#t=47

(fashion) "It is a moment, an expression. My philosophy of fashion is humour, jokes and games. I make my own rules. I never pick up something and just throw it on my back like that. There's a little bit of study, and it's always better if I think about what I'm going to wear the night before the next day. And what is to be avoided at all costs is the twinset look, the total look."

Signature look- flamboyant style- bright colours/ mixing of prints, bold/ daring.

“If you put something together and it doesn’t look so good, the fashion police are not going to come a take you away. And if they do, you might have some fun in jail.”

"When you don't dress like everyone else, you don't have to think like everyone else"

"Don't be afraid to stop traffic"

Signature look - round oversized glasses, a vibrant multicoloured wardrobe and amples of jewellery.

The Duchess of Carnegie Hall

Editta Sherman

Following on from watching 'Bill Cunningham New York', a person stood out to me which I then went on to research...Editta Sherman. Her individual bold sense of style was something which caught my eye.

Editta Sherman lived with Bill in Carnegie Hall, she is a well respected and acclaimed celebrity photographer and fashion icon. Photographing the likes of Andy Warhol, Henry Fonda, Carl Sandburg and Leonard Bernstein. Her sense of style is over the top, exceedingly glamorous and impeccably individual, as is her personality.

I also featured Editta Sherman in my Pinterest board 'Icons in Fashion'
